🍩 Classic New Orleans Beignet Recipe

Ingredients


  • ¾ cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup evaporated milk

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons shortening or butter

  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast

  • Oil for frying

  • Powdered sugar for dusting


Instructions


  1. Activate yeast: Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Make dough: Whisk in egg, milk, and shortening. Add flour gradually until smooth and elastic.

  3. Rise: Cover and let rise for about 1 hour (doubles in size).

  4. Shape: Roll out to ¼-inch thick and cut into 2-inch squares.

  5. Fry: In 370°F (185°C) oil, fry each piece 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.

  6. Finish: Drain on paper towels and dust generously with powdered sugar.
