Ingredients
¾ cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 large egg
½ cup evaporated milk
3½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons shortening or butter
1 teaspoon instant yeast
Oil for frying
Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
Activate yeast: Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 10 minutes until foamy.
Make dough: Whisk in egg, milk, and shortening. Add flour gradually until smooth and elastic.
Rise: Cover and let rise for about 1 hour (doubles in size).
Shape: Roll out to ¼-inch thick and cut into 2-inch squares.
Fry: In 370°F (185°C) oil, fry each piece 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
Finish: Drain on paper towels and dust generously with powdered sugar.
